On the list of tech companies that made the most mergers and acquisitions in the last 10 years, Cisco takes the top spot.

NeworkWorld: Who acquired the most tech start-ups during the first decade of the new millennium? Cisco, which purchased 48 companies backed by venture capital.

The rest of the top five includes IBM with 35, Microsoft with 30, EMC with 25 and Oracle with 23.

The list does not include several large deals which didn't involve venture-capital-back companies. For example, the list didn't take into account Cisco's $3.2 billion acquisition of WebEx or its $6.9 billion purchase of Scientific-Atlanta.

Despite Cisco's start-up binge, on the whole it was a slow decade for tech mergers and acquisitions.
